Research Blog: Commercial Conventions

I am doing my commercial based on the product Callaway Blue Spring Water. Viewers of water commercials would normally see a mountain or lake flourishing with water. In other cases there would be a person an unbranded bottle of water then they'd end up trying out the endorsed bottle of water. The narrator would then talk about how natural and rich the water they are presenting is. Viewers of beverage commercials like Gatorade, would have someone doing something athletic like running, followed by them drinking the advertised beverage. Then the narrator would talk about how refreshing and rejuvenating the drink is and how you should drink it especially when doing task that can burn you out.

  • The costumes worn in these commercials are sports apparel. Such as, gym shorts, sports bras, tights, tennis shoes; these clothes are usually unbranded this is meant to keep the spotlight on the product. In the other type of water commercial they' have on casual clothing and possibly pajamas.
  • Props that are normally used are towels, bottles of the water, basket balls, footballs, and other sports gear.
  • The appearance of the actors are usually in in shape, sweaty and tired. In other cases the appearance would be a regular everyday person in their kitchen, they may appear parched as they search for a refreshing bottle of water.
  • The score in the commercials are usually up beat and fast to have a motivational impact on the viewers. The score in other cases would be upbeat also but a little slower and suspenseful to have the audience wonder what will happen or how will the actors react.
  1. Conventions and codes in some water commercials are the mountains and/or bodies of water where the advertisers claim to have gotten their water from, this adds a sense of purity and naturalness to the water. In other water commercials the plain water bottles that always seem to have unpleasable content awaiting the actors taste buds which leads to them wanting a new type of water leads the viewers to believe that this water has a richer taste. Other types of conventions and codes used are the athletes sitting down to take a break and get a drink which would of course be the advertised beverage.
  2. Props in the commercial like towels or basketballs are focused on to show what the actors are doing. They sometimes zoom into the opposing water to show the lower quality of it. Lastly, the props would be centered in the camera, props like leaves or a wooden bucket, to give the impression of genuinely clean water.
  3. Ethos is used in the commercials dealing with sports when they have a known athlete drinking the beverage. It's used in the commercials with the people in the kitchen by showing famous actors or influencers and the commercials with the bodies of water showing crystal clear water and implying that this is inside of the bottles.
